The use of liposomes was introduced by Sheffold et al. And meant to detect
molecules with a very low expression level on the surface of the cell. But
recently (Scheffold et al. 2000) the same liposomes have been used to detect
membrane bound cytokine molecules.
In the protocol liposomes are filled with a fluorochrome, often fluoresceine,
and in some cases also magnetic particles were added. That way the target
molecule could not only be detected (in combination with other surface markers)
but also target molecule positive cells can also be isolated by using a
magnetic. That way live target positive cells can be isolated and used for
further experiments. The reagents are not commercial available (yet), so contact
with the developing group might help with this protocol.
