Dendritic cells are nonspecific immune cells that have the unique capacity to initiate and orchestrate antigen-specific immune responses. These cells not only determine whether a specific immune response will occur and to what extent, but also the class of the response. The meeting addresses recent studies revealing an unexpected complexity regarding the functional heterogeneity of dendritic cells, due to different lineages and maturationstages. The studies shed light on the various ways dendritic cells may initiate protection against pathogens and their vulnerability to immune evasion. In addition, the meeting will discuss how the increasing knowledge of dendritic cell function is useful in the clinic.
